The Telangana State Health Ministry clarified that the state is keeping a close watch on the news of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) coming from China and is monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Union Health Ministry. The health department has appealed to the citizens to stay away from rumours and be cautious.
No case of hMPV reported in Telangana
The Telangana Health Department analyzed data on respiratory infections in the state and found that there was no significant increase in infection cases in December 2023 compared to December 2024.

The Health Department has urged citizens to take the following precautions to avoid respiratory infections and has issued guidelines-

- Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
- Avoid crowded places and maintain distance from people affected by the flu.
- Avoid going to public places if you have a fever, cough, or sneeze.
- Drink enough water and eat nutritious food.
- Ensure adequate ventilation in all locations.
- Stay home and limit contact with other people when you are sick.
- Get enough sleep.
What not to do
- Avoid shaking hands.
- Do not reuse tissue paper or handkerchiefs.
- Avoid contact with sick people.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth frequently.
- Avoid spitting in public places.
- Do not take medications without consulting a doctor.
What did the Union Health Ministry say?
The Union Health Ministry has urged people to remain calm amid tensions over the possibility of the spread of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) in China and assured that India is well prepared to deal with respiratory diseases and the situation in China is not unusual.
The DGHS and the Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), Government of India, have issued a statement. The statement said that metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common respiratory infection virus that causes cold and flu-like symptoms during the winter season. It particularly affects young children and the elderly.
The Director General of Health Services said there is no need to panic. Metapneumovirus is like other respiratory viruses that cause the common cold. It can cause flu-like symptoms in the very old and the very young.
