Construction of INS Vikrant began in 1943 during World War II as part of the British Royal Navy fleet. It was originally named HMS Hercules, but was later renamed INS Vikrant when it was inducted into the Indian Navy.

INS Vikrant is an aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. It is the first aircraft carrier to be designed and built in India. Construction of INS Vikrant began in 2009 at the Cochin Shipyard in Kerala, and it was launched in 2013. The ship was originally scheduled to be commissioned in 2018, but due to various delays, its commissioning was pushed back to 2023.
INS Vikrant has a length of 262 metres, a beam of 62 metres and a displacement of 40,000 tonnes. The ship is powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, which provide a total power output of 80 MW. INS Vikrant has a maximum speed of 28 knots and a range of 7,500 nautical miles at 18 knots.
The ship can carry up to 26 aircraft, including MiG-29K fighters, Kamov Ka-31 helicopters and HAL Dhruv utility helicopters. INS Vikrant is also equipped with a variety of weapons, including Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles, AK-630 close-in weapon systems and torpedo launchers.
ENS Vikrant is designed to operate in both blue water and littoral environments, and is capable of carrying out a variety of missions, including air defence, anti-submarine warfare and strike operations. The ship is also equipped with modern communication, navigation and sensor systems, allowing it to operate effectively in modern naval warfare scenarios.
INS Vikrant symbolises India’s growing naval might and its ambition to become a major maritime power in the Indian Ocean Region. The ship is expected to play a key role in securing India’s maritime interests and projecting its power in the region.
