Aadhaar Mobile Number Update 2026

Aadhaar Mobile Number Update 2026 : Millions of Aadhaar users will soon be able to update their registered mobile numbers from home. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a new digital service that will allow users to change their Aadhaar-linked mobile number through the Aadhaar mobile app using OTP verification and face authentication. This update aims to benefit citizens living in remote areas as well as senior citizens who often face difficulty visiting Aadhaar centres.

UIDAI officially confirmed the launch of this service on Friday. The process has been developed to be simple, fast, and entirely online. No document submission or physical visit will be required, and the entire update can be completed within minutes.

To use the service, users will need to download the Aadhaar app and enter their Aadhaar number along with the new mobile number. OTP verification will be conducted on the old or new number. After OTP verification, users must complete face authentication using the smartphone camera. Once the process is completed, a fee of Rs 50 must be paid, though it will remain free if done along with a biometric update. Users will receive a URN to track the status on the UIDAI website. The updated mobile number will reflect within two to four weeks.

Updating the Aadhaar mobile number is important because Aadhaar is linked to the country’s largest identity system, covering more than 1.3 billion people. The registered mobile number plays a crucial role in accessing banking services, government subsidies, income tax verification, DigiLocker, and other digital platforms. If the registered number becomes inactive or lost, users face multiple challenges. Until now, updating the number required a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre, long queues, and biometric verification. The new digital process eliminates these hurdles.

A month ago, UIDAI launched the new Aadhaar mobile application, which allows a single device to store Aadhaar details of up to five family members. The app includes secure features such as selective information sharing and advanced face authentication. Users can share Aadhaar details similarly to how they scan QR codes for UPI payments, ensuring privacy by sharing only the information required.

The new Aadhaar app allows users to carry their Aadhaar digitally without any need for a physical copy. Face-scan sharing enhances security during ID verification. Biometric authentication is required to access the app, and it supports multiple Indian languages. The information stored can even be accessed offline without an internet connection.

Although the earlier mAadhaar app continues to exist, the new app has been built with a stronger privacy-first approach. Users should still use mAadhaar for downloading Aadhaar PDF copies or applying for PVC cards. Virtual ID generation and certain updates are best handled through the UIDAI portal or the mAadhaar application. The newly launched app focuses on secure, selective, and fast information sharing.

The new digital features will significantly benefit users by speeding up processes such as hotel check-ins, SIM activation, and bank KYC verification. Managing multiple family Aadhaar IDs becomes easier with the multi-profile feature. Most importantly, selective data sharing ensures that users’ personal information remains protected during verification.
